The short answer

For Google Search, no. You do not need an llms.txt file, AI only rewrites of your pages, or special "AI schema" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

That is not our opinion. It comes from Google's own guide, "Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search", announced on the Search Central blog on 15 May 2026. Here is what it says, in plain English, and what it leaves out.

A couple of definitions first. AI Overviews are the AI written summaries that sometimes appear at the top of Google results, with links to supporting pages. AI Mode is Google's conversational search, where you can ask longer questions and follow up. Google calls both "generative AI features".

Google's main point: it is still SEO

The guide answers its own headline question, "Is SEO still relevant for generative AI search?", with "In short, yes!" The reason it gives is the one to remember:

"our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems."

In practice, Google describes two techniques. The first is grounding, where the AI answer is built from real pages that Google's normal ranking systems retrieve from its index. The second is query fan out, where the system quietly runs several related searches to gather more pages. Either way, the pages come from the same index that powers ordinary search.

You may have seen the terms AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation). Google addresses them directly: from Google Search's perspective, optimising for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."

What Google says you can ignore

The guide has a section titled "Mythbusting generative AI search: what you don't need to do". For Google Search, it lists:

• llms.txt files and other "special" markup. You do not need new machine readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its AI features, because Google Search itself does not use them.
• "Chunking" content. There is no requirement to break pages into tiny pieces for AI. Google says there is no ideal page length.
• Rewriting content just for AI. AI systems understand synonyms and general meaning, so you do not need to chase every long tail variation of a phrase.
• Seeking inauthentic "mentions". Planting mentions of your brand around the web "isn't as helpful as it might seem", Google says. Its core systems focus on quality content, and other systems block spam.
• Overfocusing on structured data. It is not required for generative AI search, and there is no special schema.org markup to add. It is still worth using for rich results.

A careful note on llms.txt, because it gets misquoted. Google does not ban it or penalise it. The guide says it is completely fine to keep one for other services that use it, and that doing so "will neither harm nor help" your visibility in Google Search, because Google Search ignores it. Whether another AI product reads it is a separate question.

The guide also warns against making a separate page for every way someone might phrase a search. Doing that mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers, it says, violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy.

What still matters

The useful half of the guide is the reminder of what does count. Google's companion page, "AI features and your website", says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.

So the basics carry the weight:

1. Let Google crawl the page. That means robots.txt, and also your CDN or hosting setup. Builder platforms and security settings sometimes block crawlers without you noticing.
2. Make important content available as text, not only inside images or scripts.
3. Link to important pages from your own site so they are easy to find. See internal linking for small sites.
4. Keep structured data matching the visible page.
5. Write content people cannot get anywhere else. Google calls this non commodity content: first hand experience and a real point of view, not a summary of what is already out there.

Even then, Google is clear that meeting every requirement does not mean a page will be crawled, indexed or shown. That holds for AI features and for ordinary results alike.

What kind of evidence this is

This is official guidance from the company that runs the system. That makes it the best source for how Google Search treats these files and tactics. It is not a controlled traffic test, and Google did not publish experiment results alongside it.

That distinction matters when you read claims elsewhere. For how we weigh guidance, case studies and vendor research, see Most SEO evidence is uncontrolled.

The guide also says to be wary of third party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use "internal" Google metrics, since no third party tool has access to Google's ranking or AI systems. That applies to every SEO product, including ours.

Where SEO Dispatch fits

SEO Dispatch looks at the foundations this guide points back to: whether your pages can be crawled and indexed, whether titles and headings describe the page, and what Search Console shows for your own site. It does not sell AI only files or schema as a shortcut, and it cannot promise a place in an AI Overview. Nobody outside Google can.

Checklist

• Do not build llms.txt or special AI markup expecting it to help in Google Search.
• Keep llms.txt if another service you care about uses it. It will not hurt you in Google.
• Make sure Google can crawl and index your key pages, including through your host and CDN.
• Keep important content in text, linked from your own pages.
• Match structured data to what visitors can see.
• Spend your effort on content only you can write.
